Welcome to Curious.com

I am very honoured to be one of the first 100 teachers on a great new interactive learning website called Curious.com.

Time magazine lists Curious in their top 50 sites for 2013: “This brand-spanking-new site aims to provide an uncommonly inviting place to teach and be taught. Instructors can upload video on any subject — be it salsa dancing or making glogg — then divvy it into lessons. Unlike YouTube, Curious lets teachers choose to charge for lessons, features an oversized playback window and generally feels friendly and constructive. There are no creepy comments from anonymous YouTubers here, and the site’s proprietors currently approve teachers and eyeball content to ensure that these online classes are, well, classy.

Check out my first video for making a beaded pendant…just in time for Mother’s Day!

Etsy Shop Improvements

Etsy Shop Improvements

I recently took a class on Social Branding with Lisa McKenzie: http://lisamckenzie.com/ She inspired so many great ideas for improving my Facebook and other social media pages. I was so impressed that I went right to work making a great FB banner and created a contest to engage customers to help me come up with names for my products. After choosing the winning name for our star product I researched Google for other great names for all of our wedding cake toppers. Some are based on songs and some on expressions. I also improved my Banner on my Etsy home page. I am very happy with the results and very happy to have communicated with my Facebook followers to create an emotional connection with my work. You can see the new topper names here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/heatherboyd?section_id=6879402

As always I am very open to new ideas and designs and more suggestions for topper names!

Inspirations from SUCCESS

success magazine

I have been subscribed to Success magazine for the past two years. I was introduced to the magazine 1 1/2 years ago by Real Estate Broker extraordinaire Caroline Salette at a We2 networking breakfast. http://www.networkingmontreal.com/  She recommended the magazine and the audio CD’s. I am so grateful and have gleaned so much information and inspiration from these magazines on topics of business and happiness.

On a recent road trip to Ottawa I was listening to an interview with renegade marketer Dan Kennedy. He and Darren Hardy spoke about a “Chakanah” package which is a sort of promotional package that you send to potential customers. I was intrigued by this idea and searched high an low on-line for some more information. When I came up empty-handed I emailed Success magazine and they shot back a response within minutes with a link to the article about the “Shock-and-Awe” package. Needless to say I was laughing-out-loud at my error! Here is the article and a little taste of what you can find in Success: http://darrenhardy.success.com/2012/05/shock-and-awe/

The Art of Photography

The Art of Photography

For years I have known that one of the keys to success on Etsy.com is to have great photos. Although my own photos are pretty basic, I have been lucky that our products have sold themselves due to their originality and personal touches. Recently I changed a few of our images on my listings. Our customers have been very generous in sending us photos of our toppers on their wedding cakes. This photo of our classic personalized tandem bicycle topper is a beauty. The image was captured by Tom Luongo at a Massachusetts wedding: http://photo.luongonet.net/weddings
Since posting this photograph on my site it has been included in many Etsy Treasuries (collections of beautiful things that sellers put together to promote each other) and generated some great feedback. Many thanks to Hilary and Joe for sharing this photo from their special day.

Happiness

There is a lot of research happening on the subject of happiness. A plethora of books have been written and help groups established. At a recent MiB (http://www.mibconnections.com/)
luncheon I was delighted to have the opportunity to hear Gillian Leithman speak on the subject. She offers a range of workshops including one entitled “The Art and Science of Happiness” (http://lifeskillstoolbox.ca/)
Gillian spoke about three types of activites that make you happy:
1. Pleasurable activities; ones that are fleeting.
2. “Flow” activities; ones in which you lose all sense of time.
3. Meaningful activities; ones which infuse your life with meaning and purpose.

Those smiling faces in the photo are an example of #3. Volunteering at Beaconsfield High School making jewellery with the kids not only ignites many great new design ideas, but gives me so much pleasure. I am so grateful to have to opportunity to interact with those wonderful kids. Which brings me to Gillian’s other main idea…to keep a Gratitude Journal. She challenged us to keep a journal for 31 days and write 5 things that we are grateful for at the end of each day. Document even the littlest things and to write different things each day. The idea is that the more you identify the positive aspects of your life, the more you will attract the positive and not focus on the negative.
